Zambia are proving to be a team to watch at the on-going Africa Cup of Nations Cup finals currently underway in. Chipolpolo beat the co-hosts Equatorial Guinea 1-0 to finish top of Group A with 7 points after 3 games, while the hosts came second with 6 points.
E. Guinea, bubbling with confidence after successive 1-0 and 2-1 victories over Libya and Senegal respectively, finally met a better team, Zambia, who beat them to overtake them at the top of the group. The National Lightinging had gone into the match leading on 6 points to Zambia's 4.
Captain Christopher Katongo scored his second goal at the tournament when he beat Brazil-born goalkeeper Danilo with a low bottom corner goal in the 67th minute.
It was a cagey match with both sides eager to avoid making mistakes as they looked ahead, and even the Zambian coach Herve Renard conceded that there was little beauty in their victory.
"It wasn't a great match but the important thing was to get the points. Now it's imperative we get to the semifinals for the first time since 1996," Renard said in a post-match interview.
The National Lightning were disappointed by their failure to finish top of the group and possibly avoid playing Ivory Coast in the quarter-finals. The Elephants are through to the last eight after posting two wins over Sudan and Burkina Faso in Group B.
Libya, celebrated their first win of the tournament ever after overcoming Senegal 2-1 on the same night, but their toiling was in vain after they could only finish third in Group A with four points from three matches.
Senegal completed their 2012 AFCON finals with the wooden spoon after failing to win or even draw a single match. Much for a team that was billed as pre-tournament favourites for the title.
