Zim squad for Guinea AFCON 2017 tie announced

[Posted 24 Aug 2015]
[By Brighton Mupangavanhu]
Newly called: Burnley"s Tendayi Darikwa

Zimbabwe senior national soccer team, the Warriors' coach, Calisto Pasuwa announced what looks like a strong squad to face Guinea in an AFCON 2017 qualifier to be played in Harare on 6 September 2015. The question though is: Did Pasuwa do a proper home work on some of the players he included in that squad and some of the players he chose to omit?

The squad is a blend of the usual suspects and some big surprises.

Many fans will welcome the return to the fold of in form Czech Republic-based defender Costa Nhamoinesu of former Czech champions and current log-leaders Sparta Praha. The tall defender has been included into the squad by past coaches in the past but failed to honour any of those call-ups. It is to be seen if Nhamoinesu will honour this latest call-ups. If Costa honours the call-up. he will be such a valuable addition to the squad. He is versatile and of late has been utilised as a central defender especially in Sparta's Europa League campaign.

Other big surprises include hugely talented England-born defender Tendayi Darikwa who plays for second-tier side Burnley in England, Denmark-based striker Quincy Antipas of Hobro IF and English League One side striker Colchester United's Bonne Macauley.

It is not clear if Darikwa, who was once monitored by Everton and Manchester United two years ago, who was born and grew up in England and currently holds British citizenship, has already acquired a Zimbabwean passport to qualify him to play next weekend. That he qualifies for Zimbabwean citizenship is without a doubt because he is born to Zimbabwean parents who are based in the UK.

The same questions can be asked about Macauley, who has already been capped once, having featured in a 1-2 friendly away loss to Morocco earlier this year.

Both players are very talented and are currently in top form for their clubs in England. It is hoped that the coach has done proper home work before including these players in the squad.

What further creates doubt as to whether coach Pasuwa has done proper homework is the inclusion of a player such as Denmark-based Quincy Antipas who has never kicked a ball for Hobro in the first six matches of the 2015/2016 season Danish Superliga season. Therefore on what basis did the coach include Quincy in the squad which should be competitive? What is even more puzzling is the fact that a player who plays in probably one of the best leagues in Europe, Dutch-based Marvelous Nakamba of Eredivisie side Vitesse, is not part of the squad. This is despite the fact that Nakamba is in great form and currently commands regular place in the starting line-up of Vitesse in Netherlands' topflight league.

Good news though is to see in-form strikers Knowledge Musona, Matthew Rusike and Nyasha Mushekwi as part of the squad.
