South African Premier Soccer League matches were put on hold last weekend to allow for the AFCON qualifying match between Bafana Bafana and Niger played at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday.
A flurry of matches have been lined up by the PSL tonight. Here are the pick of the crop for today's league matches.
Moroka Swallows v Ajax Xape Town
Swallows are just coming from a 2-0 defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday two weeks ago. On the other hand, Ajax are showing great form at the early stages of the PSL season as usual. They defeated Celtic 2-0 at home in Cape Town. Ajax could claim the scalp of Swallows in tonight's match. But the Dube birds are not easy to beat at home, and the match may as well end in a draw.
Platinum Stars v Mamelodi Sundowns
Sundowns are just coming from a morale boosting 2-0 victory against Swallows. Stars too registered a convincing victory in beating Black Aces away from home. Given the fact that Stars are at home, a draw will be the fairest result. Sundowns will be looking at the deadly combination of new signing Nyasha Mushekwi and Katlego Mphela. The only problem with playing the two together is that they are both target men, but Mushekwi is a more intelligent and versatile player who can equally play a supporting striker's role. Two weeks ago Mushekwi scored two priceless goals after coming on as a second half substitute against Swallows.
Orlando Pirates v Free State Stars
Pirates have struggled in the past two seasons with hitting top form at the outset of the season. This time they look determined to change all that. They started off with a fantastic 2-1 away victory at Vasco da Gama in Cape Town. Free State stars did not win or lose in their last match, grounding a disappointing home draw against visiting Santos two weekends ago. Stars have a shrewd coach in Zimbabwean Sunday Chidzambwa, but a draw at home does not inspire much confidence and they may lose away at Pirates today.
Maritzburg v Kaizer Chiefs
The KZN side, Maritzburg, will be eager to erase memories of their defeat in a KZN derby against Amazulu a fortnight ago, and so they will come with guns blazing against Kaizer Chiefs tonight. But they may suffer the agony of playing against a team showing great form at the moment. Chiefs may pip the home team by a slender margin. Amakhosi may be without their 20-year old star who was injured while on duty with Zimbabwe away in Liberia last Sunday. But they have equally dangerous strikers like Sthembiso Ngcobo.
Supersport United v Black Aces
The league champions Supersport started the season on a bad note by their standards when they were given a a 3-0 hiding by Bidvest Wits. Black Aces on the other hand, lost at home to visiting Platinum Stars. Aces are looking like early candidates for relegation again this season. Last season they survived by the skin of their teeth in the PSL play-offs against Black Leopards. Supersport are poised to return to winning ways and may walk away winners at home.
Santos v Bidvest Wits
Wits are bubbling with confidence after walloping Supersport 3-0 last week. Santos laboured to a good draw against Free State Stars in Free State in their first league match. Santos are not an easy side to beat at home. Given Wits' confidence and their ability to defend their goal, there is a possibility of a draw between these two clubs tonight.
