Big Zimbabwe-born central defender Carlington Nyadombo was the unlikely goal-scoring hero for the home side Amazulu FC after scoring a solitary goal in Usuthu's 1-0 win over visiting Engen Santos in a Nedbank quarter-final clash in Durban on Sunday afternoon.
Nyadombo, who interestingly has No.33 as his squad number at Amazulu, grabbed the match winner in the 33rd minute and thereafter he and his defence partners defended the score-line until the final whistle.
The former Gunners defender has his Warriors captain Tapuwa Kapini as his skipper at Amazulu, and Kapini made brilliant saves during the match to deny Santos any come-back in this money-spinning prime knockout tournament in South Africa.
On Saturday night, high-riding Steve Khompela coached Free State Stars surprised Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 at Peter Mokaba Stadium to book their place into the semi-finals.
Earlier in the day, Mamelodi Sundowns had scored a 2-0 win over Maritzburg United in Pretoria, with goals from Man-of-the-match Lebohang Mokoena, while Nedbank leading goal-scorer Nyasha "Milkshake" Mushekwi continues to shake the nets in Nedbank, and scored Downs' second and his 9th goal in the competition to cement his place as Nedbank's run-away Golden Boot 'hunterr'.
Mushekwi was a second-half substitute for the injured Katlego Mphela, but that did not prevent him from registering his name on the score-sheet, and on Saturday he underlined his importance to Sundwons in this competition, and lately in the league.
Milkshake has been lately on fire. During mid-week, he grabbed a winner in a 2-1 win over Black Leopards to take Sundowns to the top of the ABSA Premiership log. I
n the Nedbank competition, after scoring six against Powerlinesin the round of 32, Mushekwi grabbed two goals against Bidvest Wits in the last 16. The Zimbabwean is certainly a player in irrestible form at the right time for Sundowns.
Supersport concluded the line-up for the semi-finalists after subduing Jomo Cosmos 1-0 in Polokwane on Sunday afternoon.
Amazulu, Free State Stars, Sundowns and Supersport will contest the semi-finals, and the draw for the semis will be conducted this coming week to determine who plays who for a place in the final.
Many would fancy a Sundowns/Free State Stars final given the great form of the two teams.Amazulu captain Kapini said during post-match interviews that he would prefer to face either Supersport or even Sundowns, and would dread facing Stars at this stage.
